About this Blog

While sitting around having coffee with a friend of mine, Jim Headley, the subject of the Fort Ground Tavern's remodel came up. We talked about this establishment and how our lives had been touched by its history. One thing led to another and before long Jim was talking about the various bars that had been in Coeur d'Alene, and I began to write them down.

The rich memories that are dug up when we talk about these establishments always bring smiles and far off stares. We cannot for loose this bit of our past, so I have established this blog to try to document this information before it is lost for ever.

The posts are in no particular order. I will post new watering holes when I get pictures or historical information about the location. Photos have been taken off other web sites and reposted here. I have established a 20 mile radius of the Cd'A area and will post any drinking establishment that resides within that circle. If you feel any images here are published without permission or violate any copyright, please contact me and they will be promptly removed.

As you read through, or look at the photos, feel free to comment. If you have a digital photo and would like to share it, email it to canyonwren@roadrunner.com and I will post it and give you credit. Contact me if you have a bar photo, but don’t have a scanner and I will help you digitize it. Take a moment and write down a memory and together we can collect the History of the Bars of Coeur d'Alene. If the bar or tavern you frequented is not listed in the blog, visit my map of the Bars of Cd’A and see if it is posted there.

  1. Hi my name is Leslee MacDonald, and back in '70's and '80's my Aunt and Uncle owned and operated the Sunset Bar. Perhaps someone might remember them, there names were Leonard and Lois Heim, they owned it for many many years and then sold it, and decided to come here to WA.,State to live. My parents at the time also lived there along with my brother, and there names George and Shirley Olson and my brothers name was Kent. My brother worked at a bar on the main street right near the water, it was on a corner; but I don't recall the name of it. But, at the same time my parents bought the property where the Sundowner Saloon is. They wanted to build a Tavern or Saloon, my father and brother started building it from top to bottom, inside there was nothing to even start with, but with hard work and imagination they created something wonderful. All the while they lived upstairs in their home and even had a vegetable garden thanks to my brother. They sold the property somewhere back in the early 1980's, I believe maybe in '83 or '84, and then moved here to Olympic Peninsula in WA., near my Aunt and Uncle. I haven't been to Coeur d'Alene since the late '70's, but I've heard how much it has changed and I'm hoping to be able to visit next spring. I would love to visit the Sunset Bar along with the Sundown Saloon and to see if that bar still exist that my brother worked at. Truthfully I just want to see everything. If anyone has information for me they can email me at robleslee@msn.com, I would love to hear from people who knew my family. Respectfully, Leslee MacDonald

    1. Hi Leslie!! Leonard and Lois Heim were my aunt and uncle as well! I remember your folks and my dad, Paul, was Leonard's little brother. I live parttime in North Idaho and my dad (age 89) was just here this weekend and we went to the Sunset!!! What an amazing time walking down memory lane!

You posted this six years ago, so I have no idea if you will see it... but had to comment!

Feel free to find my on Facebook under Lorna Holt Photography if you want to.
